The modest, yet beloved, circa 1980 Pickleweed Community Center was granted an extremely limited budget to fund an aggressive program of expansion and renovation. The old 6,500 square foot center was expanded to 24,000 square feet and now includes a gymnasium, multipurpose room, arts and crafts space, teen center, computer lab, and branch library. The challenge to our lighting design studio was to design lighting systems that would help beautify the renewed facility, provide appropriate quantities of high quality illumination throughout, while dramatically limiting energy consumption, installation and maintenance costs. In the gymnasium energy savings were maximized using zoned, low-voltage controls to allow gym lighting to be "high" or "low" for the entire gym, or individually for each of the two practice courts.
